Alabama introduced the western world to Mardi-gras, but today the state is more geared toward making sure those who want to attend college can do so.
The CollegeCounts 529 college savings plan was put into place in 2008 to help offset the costs of going to school. The program allows any grandparent, parent, or legal guardian who contributes to the plan to claim a deduction of up to $5000 per individual tax payer or $10,000 per married couple per tax year.
This can save taxpayers a maximum of $250 per tax year. While this doesn’t seem like a lot, it can help offset the costs if you have to pay out of pocket for taxes.
