South Dakota joined the union of states November 2, 1889, which made it the 40th state. The capital is Pierre. The official state bird is the Ring-Necked Pheasant and the Pasque Flower is the official state flower.
The Sioux or Dacotah Indians were honored with the naming of the state after them.
The economy of South Dakota includes (agriculture) milk, corn, cattle, hogs, wheat and soybeans and (industry) food processing, lumber/wood products, machinery and tourism.
The gross state product was $39.8-billion (2010) which ranked South Dakota as the fifth smallest state output in the nation.
The unemployment rate was 4.7% (July 2011) although 12.5% of the population was living below the poverty line (2008).
