South Carolina became the 8th state when it was admitted to statehood May 23, 1788. The capital city is Columbia. The state bird is the Carolina Wren and the state flower is the Yellow Jessamine.
The state was named in honour of King Charles I of England.
South Carolina’s economy includes tobacco, hogs, soybeans, dairy products, poultry and cattle (agriculture) and textile goods, machinery, chemical products, paper products and tourism (industry).
The gross state product was $97-billion (1997) but increased to $153-billion (2007) and unemployment was as high as 12.0% during a recession in the late 2000’s but has climbed to 8.9% (March 2012).
